The United States supported or covered up death squad activity throughout Central and South America in the 1970s and ‘80s. This included backing right-wing military dictators and brutal death squads in Guatemala, as well as creating the notorious Battalion 316 in Honduras. The US also supported the repressive right-wing regime in Honduras after a 2009 military coup, despite reports of its brutality and assassination of high-profile critics.
